Liberia is Guanacaste’s gateway. Also kwon as the white City, Liberia began as a resting place between Nicaragua and Costa Rica in 1801, Guanacaste province became a strategic point of defense against William Walker and his notorious filibusters as well the region’s capital.
A typical town of old adobe buildings and wide streets, folkloresoaked parks and plazas, Liberia has several interesting sites that describe the sabanero (cowboy) history. La Ermita de la Agonia, an archeology museum, a cowboy museum and the central market are good places to discover how old Costa Rica lived.
Since the completion of its international airport, Liberia has grown far beyond its cowboy ways. In 2005, Frankling Chang Diaz, Costa Rica’s first astronaut, inaugurated a center for plasma research in the area attracting scientists from all over world to join in the search for fuels for humanity.
