The northern Caribbean Coast is home to two national parks. Barra del Colorado Refuge is a mixture of lush wetlands and tropical rainforest. The area combines mangroves of both fresh and saltwater estuaries creating the best sport fishing conditions in Costa Rica.
Tortuguero National Park is world renowned as the most important nesting ground of the green sea turtle. The area was declared a national park in the 1970’s to safeguard the turtles from extinction. From June to October green turtles can be seen nesting each night. And around March, leatherback loggerhead and hawksbill turtles arrive to lay their eggs.
Among the swamps and dense forests of Tortuguero National Park, sloth’s, lizards, river otters, ocelots, frogs, iguanas, peccaries, crocodiles, morpho butterflies and bats. Also, howler, spider, and capuchin monkeys can be spotted. The park is also a safe haven for jaguars, tapirs, green macaws, and the scarce West Indian manatee, with about 100 manatees currently inhabiting the region.
