South Pacific Region

This are agricultural lands and river valleys, this obligates the nature to be very different. A changing climate in the forests and in the beaches will describe perfectly these coasts. In this south part of the country it will be very hard to find hotels and fast food places. This place is perfect for birding, fly fishing and mountain trekking.

People work principally on agriculture, in coffee plantations, in African palms and also in banana plants. La Amistad International Park will be the principal tourist attractive, it extends until Panama border. The principal capital is San Isidro del General.

It is principally known for its coffee plantations. It is a rural, relaxed place with a highland village landscape. It has small cities named with Saints names, San Pablo de Leon Cortes, Santa Maria de Dota, San Marcos de Tarazu, San Cristobal Sur, San Gerardo de Dota and many more. Some places are perfect for attracting high altitude species.
San Marcos de Tarazu

It is more known than any other place in this south part. Normally is a place just to pass throw and get to other places, decent of restaurants and hotels will receive you here. You can learn about the history in the central park were a spot bench will make you enjoy of the people watching and drinking a coffee.
Santa Maria y Valle de Dota

It is known for its luxury plantations around the community. This place is very quiet and normally you can hear everything around. The coffee production is the principal economic activity. An example of this is the Coopedota which offers you a half day trip so you can learn were this coffee comes from. This is a perfect place for enjoying of the Costa Rican rural culture.
San Gerardo de Dota

This place is the principal protector of the Savegre River. It was in 1952 were Efrain Chacon established a farm were today it is known as San Gerardo village. Those days they survived with Cuban beans, coffee and beef cattle. Afterwards they also plant apples and other fruit trees. These zone attracted anglers and quetzal birds, people say that they came because they liked the avocado trees. Quetzals come during April and May, inclusive there is a National park protected just for these birds. Savegre Ricer also is a good place for fishing during the high seasons, May and June.

It is the newest national park. It was official in 2005. It covers 5000 hectares of the cloud forest; it has an altitude of 2000 to 3000m.
The Savegre River starts up in the hill named Cerro de la Muerte and runs into the Pacific Ocean. This area is known for its biodiversity.
The red quetzals are the principal birds in this park but also trogons, hummingbirds, tinamous and sooty robins’ visit this place.
Beside birds this is he home of wild life species too. The flora part is very different because this place is cloudy so it give you a completely different atmosphere.
San Isidro del General

It has a population of 45.000 and it is 136 km far from San Jose. This is a very develop zone, with all the luxury places and community needs. It is located close to several highly visited tourist sites like the Cerro Chirripó, National Park, La Amistad, and other cantons close to the Wilson Botanical Garden and Playa Dominical, one of the best beaches for surfing in the world. It can locate hotels according to their needs and budget.

San Gerardo de Rivas

It is 22 km from the Chirripo River. The road is in good conditions at the beginning almost for 10 km. In the center of the town a huge soccer field will be surrounded of grocery stores known as pulperias. In this place you can watch family farms. This place has small cabinas for sleeping. The principal place to visit is the Chirripo River’s peak. Temperatures are very cold. You can talk a walk all around this place or into the mountain.

This is the main park of Costa Rica because it is very high. It measures 3820 m above the sea level. This hill are part of the Talamanca Mountain range .It divides the country in the northeast and southeast. Inside the Hill there are also two high elevations, one of 3800 m and another of 2000m. Between January and May the forest is very susceptible because of the forest fires. Quantities of trees of all sizes as well as lots of plants appear depending on the climate variations. It is also surrounded by coffee plantations and agricultural fields. The variety allows the development and a climate change in the flora and fauna. A journey towards achieving hill will permit you to see all species in the ride on the hill. The best moment to visit the forest is in the dry weather from February to March. At any time of year night temperatures can lower, this means that it is possible to be very hot in the day and cold at night.
Buenos Aires

It is 64 km south from San Isidro. Buenos Aires is known for its pine apple cultivation. It is also the meeting point for the indigenous groups as Ujarras, Salitre and Cabagra, although they have a regional association, they work to make grow the indigenous capacity. This community is also working on the hydroelectric project. It has a hot climate and a peacefull environment.
Durika Biological Reserve

It has 7500 hectares. It is a biological reserve and a working farm. This community protects the local conservation. This place makes tourists work on land and stay sleeping on farms. Good demonstrations of organic agriculture. Participants will enjoy of a familiar time in Costa Rica, because this tours principally count on the daily life around farmers.
Boruca Indigenous Reserve

The Terraba River is the locale place for this region. Boruca people are the same as Brunka. These indigenous groups are developed in many other towns, Coto, Quepos, Turrucares, Burucac and Abubaes, which are all the way to Osa’s Peninsula in Pre Columbian times. The Brunka community has many old customs that they believe in today.
Palmar

It is found in the center of the banana growing in the Diquis Valley. The Grande River and the Terraba one divide this region in 2, South and North. This place is near to the Inter -American Highway. Another attraction is the metal bridge 1 km south downtown. The exact place of this city is between San Isidro and the Panama’s border. An airstrip gives importance to this town and makes it valuable.

Paso Canoas

Paso Canoas is an international city that is located between the province of Puntarenas in the southern region of Costa Rica and the province of Chiriqui west of Panama. The border between Panama and Costa Rica as crosses from north to south, resulting in this city that is both Costa Rica as Panamanian. It is of great commercial importance among the residents of the area, finding located in a border area. It is estimated to have a population of 7,334 inhabitants The lead agency for this sector is the Ministry of Public Health which plays a role in disease prevention. Medical care and hospital care is the responsibility of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), which is an autonomous state institution. Among the medical institutions we find Valle Coto Bruss ,San Vito and La Amistad National Park.
